Our Story
About Us | Ao Cacao
Our Mission
To craft the world’s finest bean-to-bar chocolate, championing Pacific cacao origins and supporting indigenous producers with respect, transparency, and passion.
Our Why
At Ao Cacao, we believe chocolate should be more than just a treat—it should tell a story of culture, connection, and care. Every bar is a celebration of the hands that grew the cacao, the traditions of the Pacific, and the innovative spirit of Aotearoa New Zealand.
We started because we wanted to share that story, one delicious bite at a time.
Who We Are
Ao Cacao was founded by Thomas Netana Wright, a pastry chef and chocolatier with deep roots in craftsmanship and a passion for Pacific origins. Drawing inspiration from his family’s heritage—including the historic Wright’s Dairy in Chelsea, London—Thomas combines artisanal mastery with ethical sourcing practices to create chocolate that is both luxurious and meaningful.
Our team of chocolate lovers and cacao dreamers is dedicated to bringing truly exceptional chocolate to the world while uplifting cacao-growing communities. Proudly based in Aotearoa New Zealand, we craft every product with respect, care, and a commitment to excellence.
When you enjoy Ao Cacao, you’re not just tasting chocolate—you’re connecting with the land, culture, and people behind every bean.
Why We’re Different
- Direct Trade with Purpose: We work directly with indigenous cacao farmers, ensuring fair prices and meaningful partnerships.
- Celebrating Pacific Origins: We highlight the unique flavors of the Pacific, crafting chocolate that’s both delicious and culturally proud.
- Uncompromising Quality: From bean to bar, we oversee every step with precision, creating chocolate that rivals the world’s best.
- Sustainability First: Every decision we make considers the environment, from our packaging to our sourcing practices.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Thomas' artisanal journey began in London, training under renowned pastry chefs William Curley and Suzue Aoyama. He refined his skills working in 3-Michelin-star kitchens, mastering patisserie, chocolate, and bakery techniques.
Carrying forward his family’s legacy of quality and artistry, Thomas established Ao Cacao in 2021 to redefine chocolate excellence while fostering positive change in the industry. His vision? To spotlight Pacific cacao origins and build sustainable, respectful relationships with producers.
Looking Forward: Join Us in Shaping a New Legacy
Our journey has been remarkable—earning recognition in international publications, television features, and representing New Zealand on the global stage in Paris.
But this is just the beginning. Join us as we craft the future of chocolate with Ao Cacao, where luxury meets responsibility and every bite tells a story.
